A Cautionary Tale, and a Plea for Help

I had always wanted an Orbit Reader 20 Braille display, and when the plus version came out, I wanted that even more. I tried in vain to get one from the American Printing House. They said they couldn’t ship overseas, at least not to the EU.

Recently, I heard that someone else had purchased one from the A T Guys, but she was having trouble getting it. (I don’t know if she Got it yet.)

Meanwhile, I’d been looking on Flusoft’s website, as I heard that was the seller of the Orbit Reader here in Germany. I was uncertain if they have the plus version. The person I mentioned above and I talked on Twitter, and she seemed to think that they do carry the plus, so my wife ordered it for me.

When it arrived, that was Saturday, and this is Monday, I dove into the manual and had learned it pretty well.

This morning I got to looking on Orbit Research’s support site and saw, by comparing version numbers, that my display is the one that isn’t the plus version, and here’s where I made my fatal error.

Stupidly I downloaded the firmware for the plus, thinking mine would just upgrade to it. I got a message saying "Invalid Binary File", and then the device shut down. It won’t come back on, and I tried everything listed in the manual, which I fortunately saved to my Victor Reader Stream, to try and revive it. There are very few options for that listed in the troubleshooting section, and nothing worked at all.

So, does anyone know anything I might could try, short of sending it back to Flusoft? I don’t even know if they service these devices. Anyhow, any suggestions, if there are any, if there’s any hope, would be greatly appreciated!

I do know now that Flusoft definitely does not carry the plus version, nor do I think they do the plus upgrades.
