A Song I Wrote

When I was in my twenties I was in a deep, dark depression, from the depths of which the first verse of this song developed. I also wrote, or kept in my memory, the chorus of it. Try as I might I could never write a second verse, so I let the song go unattended for many, many years.

I wish I could say that I have this song recorded but I haven’t attempted that rather daunting task yet. Recently, though, the first line of the second verse fell into my mind and also made the title of the song obvious to me.

Now, loyal blog followers of mine, you may be wondering, and rightly so, why I’d wanna pursue this dark song again. Why would I want to revisit that head space again? The answer is this, that I’ve always been a rather depressed person, and recent events in my marriage has led me down this path again. I have come to realize I’ll never be what my partner wants me to be. She wants someone who speaks fluent German and I’ll never be such a person. I’ve come to realize that there isn’t enough material out there for me to learn properly, and it’s so much more complicated than I ever could’ve imagined.

At any rate, I now present the text of the song. I’ll come back and edit this entry when I have a recording, hopefully a satisfactory one, of it.

Hopeless Fantasy

First Verse

With each new day I clean the slate and make another start,
It saves all the pain involved of having a broken heart,
How can it be said that time heals broken memories,
When each new day that comes brings its new miseries?

Chorus

Oh, for a happy moment, oh for a joyous day,
Oh for ecstasy that would never go away,
Oh for friendliness, oh for sympathy,
Oh for someone who would always love me!

Second Verse

With each new day I think about this hopeless fantasy,
And ponder all things possible if only this could be,
Why should life just pass me by before it can begin,
And leave me with such misery and emptiness within?

Chorus

Oh, for a happy moment, oh for a joyous day,
Oh for ecstasy that would never go away,
Oh for tenderness, oh for sympathy,
Oh for someone who would always love me!
Oh for someone who would always love me!
