There was a song I heard sung at my dad’s funeral, sung by my younger brother. I learned it soon after that and sang it at my church at times during special music interludes. I’ve forgotten some of the words so I was doing various searches for it and I can’t find it anywhere. I think the song is called One More Hill, One More Valley, and I think it was written by Elmo Mercer.
Some of the words are below:
First verse
I am longing to see,
All the things promised me,
When my race here on earth is complete,
I believe more today,
Heaven’s not far away,
Soon I’ll bow at my dear savior’s feet.
Chorus
Going home,
Going home,
Never more to be sad or alone,
There are friends and loved ones waiting,
(They came)? to cheer me on,
One more hill, one more valley, and then home.
Second verse
I have failed many times,
But forgiveness I find,
When I let Jesus have full control,
…
And that is where I’m drawing a blank. The words in parentheses in the chorus are ones of which I’m unsure.
If there are any gospel nerds following this blog and happen to know of this song and where to find it I’d be truly grateful! Alternatively, if someone can fill in the blanks, I’d be truly grateful for that as well!
And, wow! I just remembered the rest of the words to the second verse.
Second verse
I have failed many times,
But forgiveness I find,
When I let Jesus have full control,
I’ll not fear what’s ahead,
For I know I am led,
By the one who has ransomed my soul.
The words I’m not so sure about in the chorus might be "they seem" instead of "they came", but I’m just not certain of that.
Here’s a little update, some info I found on the composer. His name is William Elmo Mercer. He was born in 1932 and just recently died in 2020. The site had some of his songs, but not the one for which I was looking.
